From Tragedy to Triumph: Honoring the Fallen in the Women, Life, Freedom Movement

15 September 2024

On September 14 and 15, 2024, the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death and the victims of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement were commemorated in Sweden, with gatherings in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Despite the brutality of the Islamic regime in Iran, the spirit of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement remains unbroken. People, both inside and outside Iran, continue to raise their voices, demanding justice for those whose lives were stolen and for the thousands who remain imprisoned under false accusations.

A young woman who actively participated in the protests following the murder of Mahsa Amini by Iran’s morality police in 2022 shared her thoughts: “Women, Life, Freedom means equality without discrimination. It means dignity, peace, safety, and the elevation of thought.”

At Sergels torg in Stockholm, many gathered to honor the memory of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement and its martyrs. The prevailing sentiment was one of frustration that, despite the condemnation of the Islamic Republic by international organizations and human rights groups, the global response has been insufficient. The Iranian people’s call for freedom echoes far beyond their borders, urging the world to take a stand against this systematic oppression. This is not just a fight for Iranian lives, but for the universal values of dignity and human rights.

As we remember those who have fallen, we are reminded that this movement is far from over. The fight for freedom, justice, and equality continues. The sacrifices of MajidReza Rahnavard, Mohsen Shekari, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Mohammad Hosseini, and countless others serve as a testament to the strength and courage of the Iranian people.

Now, more than ever, solidarity is critical. The international community must amplify the voices of the oppressed and hold the Islamic Republic accountable for its crimes. We cannot allow these brave souls’ sacrifices to be in vain. Together, we can pressure governments, demand international sanctions, and provide platforms for Iranian activists to share their stories.

The “Women, Life, Freedom” movement is not over. The Iranian people are determined to continue their struggle for freedom. As one woman at the demonstration in Stockholm said, “Women, Life, Freedom is something that we want—it is something that we will not give up.”
