Today, 19 July 2026, Iranians woke up to the news of the execution of Erfan Mohammadi, 18, and Gol Mohammad Mohammadi, 23, in Isfahan.
Both were sentenced to death, along with ten other individuals, in connection with the killing of four members of the Basij and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Meydan Ali Khani area of Isfahan during protests in January.
Gol Mohammad, an Afghan national, had helped protesters by providing them with shelter to protect them from arrest. According to reports, the trial was grossly unfair. According to human rights organizations, the trial fell far short of international fair trial standards. The defendants were reportedly sentenced to death after only three court sessions, each lasting approximately one hour, raising serious concerns about due process and access to an effective defense. Their executions have renewed international concern over Iran’s use of the death penalty in protest-related cases and heightened fears for others who remain on death row.
